Some have been calling the upset victory of UK Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn a ‘wake up call’ for Democrats, that it’s proof positive Bernie Sanders would have won the election had he survived the primaries. This of course discounts the millions of voters who legitimately preferred Hillary Clinton for myriad reasons, not the least of which that she was a woman who was supremely qualified and experienced for the job. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just more grousing from the Bernie-or-busters and proves nothing other than their blind obstinacy. Corbyn’s performance was a reaction to May, to nationalism, and to the reality of Donald. Plain and simple. In the wake of our national disgrace, if a presidential election were to be held today in America, chances are pretty damned high that the Democrat would win. It wasn’t Corbyn’s socialist ideology that made his bid successful…it was May’s hubris that did her in – and in 2018 it will be Trump’s that turns congress blue again..
So, to the Bernie supporters who refused to vote for Hillary, I would advise that you stop looking for ways to excuse your egregious error in judgement, and on the next go-around support the candidate least likely to blow up the goddamned country. Because, like it or not, you are complicit in this nightmare and no matter how you cry, ‘out damned spot,’ the blood is on your hands. The only ‘wake up call’ here is your unforgivable decision to cast your ballot for third party nudniks like Jill Stein or worse yet, stay home on election day. We are all of us suffering under the consequences of your selfish action.
We also must never forget that it was Millennials who were the worst offenders. Hillary Clinton lost those crucial battleground states in large part to lack of turnout from young voters (18-29). Politics is not about perfection. There is no such thing as a perfect candidate, there is, however, always a clear decision between the imperfect and the untenable. Do I believe Clinton was the greatest choice as a candidate? No…she was the only choice. I’m sure to many young people this argument falls on deaf ears. I mean, what’s the big deal, right? You’re young… you can ride this wave out, no sweat. But try thinking about someone else besides yourselves for a change, I know it’s hard, but give it a try. Your decision to not vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016 will have a direct and devastating impact on millions of lives for decades to come. Because of your decision, it’s estimated that 23 million people will lose their health care…that 44 million people will lose life-saving safety net programs that they rely on for food and medicine. It is because of you — yes, you — that the Supreme Court will now be stacked with conservative nimrods that will run ramshod over your inalienable rights. The fault does not lie with Republicans. That faction of society will always vote the same way…they are unreachable. It’s either about their bankbooks or their guns and religion. You, supposedly, should know better than those congenitally moronic muldoons. How does it feel?
The Democratic Party is flawed to be sure, but it’s the only game in town. Instead of tearing it all down in the name of some laughably idealistic revolution, try working with the system. American Democracy has worked pretty well for over 200 years, do you really believe you contingent of snowflake dipsydoodles really have a better answer? And do you actually think it’s a geriatric Senator with a middling record of legislation, who’s spent his entire career representing an inconsequential state best known for being the birthplace of Cherry Garcia? You’ve been handed a fairytale narrative and it’s time you grew up…or more to the point…woke up!
The midterm elections are around the corner, are you going to learn from the hard-earned lesson of President Sunkist McDipsydoodle or are you going stand on your misguided principles, yet again, to the further devastation of this country, screw that….to humanity?
The choice – unfortunately – is in your hands. Next time…do the right fucking thing.
